In Philadelphia, a couple was driving on a black pickup truck. They were on their way to the Philadelphia Zoo when tragedy struck. A tire on the truck blew while they were on the Schuylkill. The driver was traveling in excess of 65mph. Because of the speed and road conditions, the truck flipped several times causing the passenger to be thrown through the front window of the car. The driver managed to get out and get help. The passenger was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Neither the passenger nor the driver was buckled. Thankfully both people lived, but the passenger never fully recovered. After multiple surgeries and months in the hospital and rehab, the passenger can now walk, but with great difficulty.
The lessons that can be learned from this accident are simple, but ones that everyone needs a reminder on from time to time.
First always buckle up. It's a simple lesson that many of us forget to do. If the driver of this accident had been buckled, then that person might not have had the multiple injuries that they received. That simple process might have saved them months of pain healing from those surgeries and having to learn how to walk again. Not to mention the difficulty that they have now. Because of that lack of judgment this passenger still has hard time performing the simplest tasks around the house. They struggle to do everything from bathing to keeping their house in order.
Next, if you are going on a trip that requires a lot of driving have your vehicle checked. Make sure that your tires are good. In this case the couple failed to check their tires and as a result one of them blew. After further inspection by their insurance agency it was found that the tire had hardly any tread on it. The passenger had been referred to our firm from a previous client, as they knew only our firm could get them the maximum possible compensation.
Also, be aware of road conditions. If the driver had been traveling at a proper speed for the condition of the road when the tire blew, they might not have rolled their vehicle. Always be on the lookout for a hazard in the road. And, travel in a speed conducive to the weather conditions. There have been many accidents that could have been avoided if the driver had traveled cautiously because of the weather.
It's a shame that this couple didn't do any of these simple things. Their actions not only caused them great pain, but it also affected their family. Their family had to wonder for months, whether their loved one was going to live or not. This couple didn't stop to think how their decisions would affect their family members.
Nobody wants to be this couple. But, unfortunately we are not able to predict the future and something like this might happen. How will your decisions while driving affect the reminder of your life, but also your families? Please take the time to buckle up, perform regular maintenance, and drive accordingly. Do what this couple did not.
