Over the last few weeks there have been several accidents in the Philadelphia are involving a vehicle and one or more buildings. These instances are becomingly increasingly common in not only the Philadelphia area, but all over the country. Car accidents like this cause severe damage for not only the vehicle involved but the buildings as well. In many instances the accidents take place in residential areas affecting homes, land and even city owned property.
A 12 year old girl was injured on October 1st after a car smashed into her home. She was sitting in the dining room when the speeding vehicle slammed into the home. The front end of the car went about three feet into the home and caused a wall to fall in on the girl. Eyewitnesses on the scene reported the driver first hit a parked car then knocked over a stop sign before he finally hit the house. A 17 year old passenger of the vehicle also sustained injuries in the crash. The 24 year old operator of the stolen vehicle was unharmed in the crash.
Just a few days earlier on September 26th a speeding vehicle once again collided with a building. The accident happened in North Philadelphia near West Silver Street. The driver of the SUV ran a stop sign and then smashed into the abandoned building. The building could not withstand the impact and collapsed. All four passengers, one of whom was pregnant all sustained injuries. the problem city officials now face is the possibility of the rest of the building coming down.
It's not just homes and abandoned buildings that are being crashed into in the area but public restaurants as well. On October 3rd a fast food restaurant on Penn Ave was involved in another crash. This time the car actually went in the restaurant and ended up injuring 6 patrons. All of the injured were sent to the hospital with minor injuries. No word yet on when the location will be back up and running.
The common thread in each one of these recent accidents seems to be a lack of awareness on the part of the driver. And as in most car accidents speed is definitely another variable that came in to play. Being aware of your surroundings is extremely important while driving, something we can forget about when we are so used to driving everyday.
By taking a little bit extra time to be aware of your surroundings you can save a lot of people time and money in the long run. No one wants to look up and realize because they sped through a stop sign they have now crashed their vehicle through someone else's living room. Can you imagine the cost for medical bills and damages to the home, let alone your vehicle? Your insurance premium would be through the roof after an accident like that. Let's just hope this brand new trend of cars colliding with buildings in the Philadelphia area ends very, very quickly.
